Student Employment Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in applying for employment. We offers students a broad range of employment opportunities including:

  • Working at our service desk assisting other students, faculty and staff.
  • Assisting in the processing of books and other materials.
  • Digitizing information for access on the internet and via Interlibrary Loan.
  • Assisting in Archives and Records Management.
  • Working in the Writing and Communications Center.
  • Various other office tasks and special projects.

You can apply for student positions below. If we have no open positions we encourage you to apply anyway. That way you will be considered should a position open in the future. We will keep your application on file for one year from the application date. 

All student positions in the library are part-time with a maximum of 20 hours per week. Pay is dependent on experience with a minimum of $12.50 per hour. To work at the library as a student employee you must:

  • be enrolled in S&T classes during the semester you plan to work. During the summer semester you must either be enrolled in summer classes or in fall classes.
  • complete all required forms and documents and be eligible to work in the U.S. If you are in an international status, please contact the International Enrollment Office for information about employment eligibility and requirements. 

Please note that you may not be eligible for a position if you are currently employed elsewhere with the University.

Work-Study Students

In the federal and institutional work-study programs, you work part-time to earn money to help pay for the cost of your education. The work-study program is for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need. The program encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.

If you are a student participating in the Work-Study Program in addition to completing our application please notify the Financial Aid office that you wish employment at the library.

Student Archives Assistants work with the Archivist to transcribe documents. Additionally, they may also prepare items for filing. Responsibilities include:

  • Transcribing old Finding Aids into Word documents from jpegs.
  • Verify the work against the original, correcting errors that may have been present in the original.
  • Unrolling and identifying oversized materials for transfer to flat file cases.

What is a typical work schedule?

  • Individual work schedules will vary depending on your class schedule; the assistant will work 6-9 hours per week.
  • Work hours are scheduled between 8am and 4pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Student employees are expected to keep a consistent work schedule with proper notification of supervisor(s) of expected tardiness or absence.
  • NOTE: The year-round temperature in the Archives is 65-69⁰ F. Dress accordingly.

Become a Communication and Writing Coach at the Writing and Communication Center! In this role, you'll play a pivotal part in supporting students in honing their communication and writing skills.   • Observe and engage in multiple coach-led consultations.

  • Respond promptly to emails and requests from the center director or peer team lead.

Student Digitization Assistants work closely with other to digitize materials using a variety of scanning equipment. Additionally, they prepare items for scanning, perform quality control, and create derivative files. Responsibilities include:

  • Scanning a variety of original materials following set standards; perform set-up functions, scan pages, and save files in standard formats for storage and display
  • Perform quality inspection of scanned images for overall image quality and adherence to specifications; rescan problem images as necessary
  • Record the required metadata for managing files
  • Create derivative files for delivery using software, such as Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Creative Suite

Student library assistants assist patrons in checking items out and in, helping patrons to locate items (either physically or online), reshelving, organizing, arranging, and finding library materials. Duties also include assisting with library technology (copiers, scanners), applying library policy and procedure, performing assessment tasks, and may include scanning and delivering of electronic documents. Students may be assigned special projects or other duties as needs require. Candidates should be able to push and pull loaded book carts. Some heavy lifting may also be required.
